Over the years, artists have given a symbol to each of the evangelists. St. Mark's symbol is a winged lion because his Gospel begins with the story of John the Baptist who, like a roaring lion, called people to repent.
St. Mark Catholic School's Tradition of the Winged Lion
Traditions are important. Who we are as people, families, communities, and culture is rooted in our tradition. Traditions are kept and passed on from generation to generation as a way to tie us together with a common thread.
As you approach the school entryway, let your feet pass over the names of current school members and of those who have gone before you; those who continue to be tied to the many traditions of St. Mark Catholic School. Know that the common bond is Gospel values and a commitment to academic excellence. Know that you are standing on ground “where faith and knowledge meet.”
The majestic winged lion plaque in the center of the engraved bricks is a reminder of the power of The Word, spiritual elevation, wisdom, and peace. The winged lion is a symbol for proclaiming the Gospel with a roar; a lion’s pride.
“Thou shall NOT tread on the winged lion.”
Guide your children through the courtyard; protect the winged lion plaque from feet. Tell your children what the symbol represents, and encourage their reverence. As your children follow their educational journeys, they may find collegiate traditions that remind them of this St. Mark tradition. Perhaps they will smile knowing they had a part in creating and upholding tradition.
